This excellent Estate Syrah was sourced from the Mere Road Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay. The 2014 growing season was generally hot and dry, with welcome intermittent rain. Together with a settled autumn, conditions were perfect for ripening, with a slightly earlier than usual compressed harvest.
After a short cold soak lasting three days to extract important colour and flavour components, the must was fermented in a selection of open top, closed stainless steel vats, and barrel before being pressed off skins. The wine was sent to barrel for nine months aging in quality 50% French and 50% American oak, then egg white fined, and filtered just before bottling on 17 March 2015, under Stelvin screw cap.
This delightful medium-bodied Syrah shows excellent varietal character, with an abundance of white pepper, black berry fruits and dark cherry flavours and aromas, complemented by spicy oak. Ready for immediate enjoyment, it will also reward cellaring.
