“Tom McDonald pioneered Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay in the 1950’s here at the Church Road Winery. Now, in exceptional vintages, we dedicate our best endeavors with this noble variety to this legendary Hawke’s Bay winemaker. Small parcels of our best Chardonnay blocks are grown, made and blended to create a wine of exceptional character and longevity. The 2013 TOM Chardonnay is a single vineyard wine grown on our Tuki Tuki Estate, a site that was originally established by Tom. This slightly elevated vineyard, in sight of the coast, catches the cool sea breeze producing Chardonnay with great fragrance, finesse and minerality. Sensitive winemaking techniques including hand harvesting, sorting, gentle whole bunch pressing and wild fermentation have emphasised a focused, linear palate structure and layers of subtle complexity to deliver a wine with intriguing depth.”

“Bright, light golden-yellow colour with slight green hues. The nose is well-proportioned with great concentration and intensity of white stonefruits and citrus fruits entwined with layers of complexing gunflint reduction, nutty and mineral elements and an underlying mealy, creamy fruit and barrel-ferment amalgam. Medium-full bodied, the palate is refined and tightly bound in presentation, lending a degree of elegance, but the flavours of white stonefruits and complexing gunflint and minerally lees and reduction are intense and concentrated, and show great presence. Waves of mealy and citrus fruit and creamy, nutty oak emerge to complete the mouthfeel, and the flavours are supported by some phenolic grip and fruit extract textures. The wine carries to a well-packed, concentrated, long lingering, dry, textural finish. This is a complex, contemporary, gunflinty Chardonnay with great intensity, presence and surprising elegance. This will evolve over the next 5-6+ years. 60% Mendoza, 37% clone 15 and 3% clone 95 fruit from Tuki Tuki, hand-picked and WBP, indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 85% French oak barriques and 15% puncheons, the oak 54% new, with batonnage and 100% MLF.” 19.5+/20 May 2016
