The first thing you notice when you look through the list of gold medal winners is the lack of big Otago producers. It seems they have dropped the ball this year and some of the smaller producers have picked up the slack. We tried this “ Tiwha” Pinot Noir from Coal Pit last week and were well impressed. Hand harvested grapes from their Gibbston vineyard have created a wine with a nose of violets and spice leading through to an opulent palate of Morello cherry, game and forest floor characters typical of this region. There are some subtle tannins on the finish and so this wine can easily mature up to 2020.
