Our Story

Scenic Cellars opened its doors in 1981 as Taupo’s first boutique wine store. In November 2002, three employees, Ian Isaacs, Cate Langley and Sarah Barlow, purchased the business, maintaining the focus of quality wine and service.

In April 2008, Yum Food Company opened a Coffee and Food Deli within the Scenic Cellars store and converted an upstairs function venue into a Cook School.

Today, Scenic Cellars is an iconic New Zealand premium wine establishment, stocking over 3,000 different wine labels and over 100,000 bottles of rare and fine wines from all over the world, at prices to suit all budgets.

Scenic Cellars houses New Zealand’s largest underground retail wine cellar which is open to the public, housing wines in all price ranges. The Cellar is also used as a function venue for weddings, dinners, and wine tastings.

The store was also the second retail premises in the southern hemisphere to install an Enomatic Tasting Machine in a retail store, to allow customers to self taste domestic and international wines. 32 wines are available for tasting every day on this system.

The store is well known for excellent customer service and staff knowledge, with their small team having over 140 years wine industry experience between them.

Scenic Cellars run a wide array of events throughout the year, including various wine tastings, whisky tastings, themed dinners, and wine options games.

Monthly newsletters and regular e-newsletters are issued to their database of more than 20,000 customers, offering store specials and information on events.
